Moderating Disqus Comments on Your Blog Via Email

Disqus-Comment-EmailI use Disqus on this blog to handle the massive avalanche of comments that routinely flood my blog posts (true story). On frequent(rare) occasions, someone leaves an insightful comment or question that warrants an appropriate response.

Now, I could reply back by logging in to my WordPress dashboard and accessing the Disqus moderation panel (or just login to my account on Disqus), but it would take too long for me to respond.

That’s when I discovered a neat feature where you can moderate Disqus comments via email.

First, make sure you have email notifications turned on when new comments are posted on your website/blog.

Once that is out of the way, and the first email notification arrives, Disqus allows you to moderate comments without the need to exit your email client. Open the email, and reply back with any of the following commands:

  • Spam: marks comments as spam
  • Approve: approves a comment for display on your site
  • Delete: deletes comment from your site

But wait! There’s one more!

You can also reply to comments simply by responding to the email. Just remember to delete your email signature.

Pretty neat, eh? Who needs to login to their WordPress or Disqus dashboard when you can moderate comments via email?

I like it! Although with a large inflow of comments, wouldn’t that mean a large inflow of email as well? And if you have a smart phone that notifies you when you get email, that seems like a lot if unnecessary notifications.

I’m actually starting to delete Disqus from all my sites. Unfortunately too many rude and extremely aggressive people leave messages and it wastes too much time moderating them :(
