Youtube redesigned its website recently. Again. While most people generally hate it whenever their favorite websites undergo any discernible change, I’m in the small minority of people who actually looks forward to these types of things. New bug fixes? Update. Optimized for iPhone 5? I don’t own one but heck, why not? Update.
The sad life of a technology blogger.
If there is one thing that I truly detest in the new Youtube design though, it’s that the “Browse” link adjacent to the search bar is now gone! Yeah, I know. First world problems.
As you can see in the screenshots above, the previous design had three links sitting to the right of the search box: Browse, Movies, and Upload. With the new design, Upload stands alone. But, wait! There’s a drop down menu on the Upload button. Nope, false alarm. It’s just links to Video Manager and Analytics.
Visiting the Browse page was always a joy for me. On this page, I could find the latest videos that were going viral in recent days. New cat video getting millions of hits? Yes, please! I didn’t want to have to go search on Twitter or Facebook to find that stuff.
So, how have I coped in the meantime? Miserably, of course. Youtube’s recommendations are decent, but since most are videos created years ago, they lack a bit of relevancy. Luckily, I’ve found a solution to my dilemma.
Visit Youtube’s Charts page and you will find a treasure trove of videos that have become popular recently. This is the closest thing that resembles the prior “Browse” page that I sorely missed. The page lets you filter videos based on date and category. There’s also a section on the bottom that displays “Popular Videos on the Web”. Not sure how that’s any different but hey, more viral videos to watch! There’s also a channel called “Popular on Youtube” that resembles what I was looking for. The channel itself is auto-generated by Youtube and is worth subscribing to.
I wonder why Youtube would choose to hide this glorious page? I just hope that it doesn’t end up on Google’s next spring-cleaning list.
